When a person goes missing without leaving traces, the service of “research in the interest of the families” (RIF) makes it possible to seek this person. The request must be formulated by a family member and can concern only the major people.
Are excluded from this procedure, the people missing under worrying conditions (depressive state, suicidal intention, and victim of a crime or an offense…), minors, lunatics, amnesics, research entering within the genealogical framework of study.

Any person can make seek a major person of which it does not have news for:
- the achievement of certain formalities (to regulate a succession…),
- to join again relations.
Very major the right has to cease any contact with its family. Profiting from the law of protection from major, its address will not be stated that with its formal assent. In all the cases, the informant will be personally informed of the research result.


How to announce a disappearance
To make a statement, it is necessary to be major, justify of a bond of close relationship or alliance with the required person and to know her civil statue.
It is advisable to present to you to the police station or the gendarmerie on which your residence depends, to make a declaration detailed and collected by official report. Research will be immediately carried out.
You must communicate to the police officer who receives you:
- several recent photographs of the missing person,
- his/her registry office and description, his/her clothing aspect,
- the description of the objects in his/her possession (jewels, photographs…),
- circumstances of his/her disappearance,
- his/her psychological and moral profile, his/her health condition,
- elements allowing to think of suicidal intentions (drugs, weapons, written…),
- the list of his/her friends and relations, places he/she used to attend, like his/her practices. Research can take the shape of checks in the vicinity and with the people usually around, of patrols in the places where he/she used to go, of research in hospitals…
- documents in proof of the family ties with the required person (copy of birth certificate, family record book, judgment of divorce…).

For a minor, to provide the contact information about the adults with which he/she feels particularly close (grandparents, uncles, cousins, friends, neighbours…) and in a general way, any information the person (particular anxiety, meet or dispute recent…).

Course of research
The investigations are carried out, initially, at the regional level by the prefectural service of research in the interest of the families by L «intermediate of the national police force and the gendarmerie.
If no result is obtained after a few weeks, research is extended to the whole of the national territory. In the absence of result, research is continued all the current year and the following year.


In the event of failure of research
If, within 6 month, starting from the beginning of research at the national level, no result is reached, a certificate of “vain research” can be delivered, under certain conditions, if somebody makes the request of it. This certificate does not have a value in oneself, but it can be useful in various procedures (divorce…). This certificate does not stop research and it is delivered by the service which collected the declaration of the missing.
There exists the possibility of asking the inscription of the person missing the file from the required people (FPR).

The informant commits himself warning the services of any news which he could have of the required person and must communicate all the information likely to help research.
In the event of return of the sought person, it is necessary to immediately inform the service initially contacted.
In the event of disappearance of a major person of nationality foreign, likely to be abroad, it is appropriate to contact the consular authorities of the country of origin of the person.

For any person, disappearance can be regarded as worrying according to the circumstances which surround it: age, health condition, circumstances of disappearance…
